Jaguar XJ8 (X308) timing chain tensioner generation 1, 2 and 3
The secondary/upper timing chain tensioner
Since I couldn't find a page on the internet with photos showing this clearly I made one myself.
Generation 1, 1997 -> 2000. Generation 2, 2000 -> ? Reinforcement to prevent cracks + spring assist in case of oil preassure fail in the tensioner.
Generation 1, 1997 -> 2000. Generation 2, 2000 -> 2005? Reinforcement on the back of the tensioner to prevent cracks.
Timing chain tensioner, generation 1. It has a crack and the plastic cap has been torn off which made the timing chain run direct on the metal.
Even though generation 2 had the reinforcement the cracks started in the same place as on generation 1. This happens without matter what colour the plastic has.
The 2nd generationen of timing chain tensioners (they were made in different colours).
The 2nd generationen of timing chain tensioners. On the left one the timing chain has run direct on the metal.
The manufacture year for tensioners in generation 1 and 2 is imprinted on the back.
The secondary/upper timing chain tensioner generation 3. (The spring is locked by the tension retainer to make the assembly easier.)
3rd generation secondary/upper timing chain tensioner in the right bank
The same as above.
The right valve cover.
Secondary/upper timing chain tensioners generation 1. On both the timing chain has run direct on the metal wich is clearly visible on the one to the right in the photo.
Secondary/upper timing chain tensioners generation 2.
Secondary/upper timing chain tensioners generation 2. (The same as above seen from the reversed angle.)
